About Us

DesiLit works to build support for South Asian and diaspora writers by:

  • enhancing public awareness of their work through local readings and events,
  • creating opportunities for new and aspiring South Asian writers to learn from others in the field and develop their work, through workshops and classes, and
  • developing a supportive community among those interested in South Asian literature.

DesiLit was initially created in the summer of 2004 by a group of writers and readers, growing out of discussions at a SAPAC meeting in Chicago. The Chicago members were primarily interested in putting on a literary festival in the city, bringing South Asian and diaspora readers and writers together. Since then, we have hosted hosted the Kriti Festival several times along with hosting various other readings and events and a monthly book club that meets in Lincoln Square.

In late summer of 2004, we added a Bay Area chapter; several other chapters followed soon thereafter.
