Sad Tree

by Indran Amirthanayagam

Sad tree makes the rhyme
easy: sepalika, arbor-tristis,
pavazhamalli, languages
name flowers fallen

by roots, in the corner plot,
on the morning of letters
sent from the island asking
for a kiss, some prick

of love to recall early
ambling across railroad tracks
to a beach unsullied
by cadavers, freak waves,

idyll that calls
like a siren to forget
me not on a bed
of white buds crying.
